Driving a long-haul truck can be a lonely, dangerous business—one that is full of temptations and spiritual hunger. That's where nationwide organizations like Christian Truckers Chapel Ministries and Truck-Stop Ministries, Inc., come in.

What inspired their efforts? In the case of Joseph Hunter of Truck-Stop Ministries, it was an accident in which his rig was destroyed. Coming so close to death revitalized his Christianity. For over seventeen years, he and his wife, Jan—along with volunteer chaplains—have offered Christian counseling and worship services. Recently, they were awarded an "Extra Mile Award" by rpm magazine for their good deeds.

The number of people touched by such contacts is significant. The chaplain assigned to one set of truck stops served by the Pennsylvania Council of Churches reported that in 1997 more than a hundred Bible studies and prayer and worship services were provided. In addition, over 250 truckers and other individuals were given spiritual and emotional assistance. Besides distributing more than 2,400 inspirational notes and prayer cards, the chaplains in this one district also gave out 279 Bibles and New Testaments.
