Effects of cold weather healed
I experienced a healing that reminded me that it is never all right to neglect error of any type, no matter how minute. In July 1993, I left home in Nigeria to fly with my wife to the United States to attend our annual Christian Science Students Association meeting. While waiting in Brussels for about eight hours before our next flight, we experienced early morning cold temperatures. On our way to New York, I began to experience serious coughing and pain in my lungs. It was then that I realized I had neglected to defend thought immediately against the false suggestion that the cold could cause illness. That notwithstanding, I woke up to Truth and realized that yielding to this suggestion was human, while Truth is divine.
Science and Health says, "The divine must overcome the human at every point" (p. 43). I had been tempted to be concerned that I hadn't had any material shelter, protection, or strength against cold and its effects. I now reasoned correctly that it is Truth that makes us free, according to the Master, Christ Jesus.
I then remembered that the Bible refers in several places to God as a "refuge." For instance, in Psalms, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble" (46:1). One dictionary defines refuge as "shelter or protection from danger, difficulty." This shelter or protection, I knew, is not any material object. It is the consciousness of God's, Love's, ever-presence, taking care of His creation always, and nothing is closer to us in our daily life than this Love.
