Elijah and Elisha
INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE
According to the Old Testament, there were prophets who lived centuries before Jesus, whose faith allowed them to do many wonderful things. Among them are Elijah and Elisha. You can learn more about them in the Bible in several chapters from First Kings and Second Kings (see I Kings, chaps. 17–19; II Kings, chaps. 1–6).
Elijah respected and obeyed God's will. At one point God sent Elijah to Zarephath, which belonged to Sidon, a Phoenician port in the ancient times. A very poor widow there fed him with what little she had left to eat. Because she trusted the promise from God that Elijah gave her, she was never without flour or oil, and everybody in her house was able to eat throughout a time of drought. Then one day, the widow's son got very ill and died. She called on Elijah to help her child. He prayed to God, and the child revived.
