Angels are always with us

I Have relied on God's angels to guide every facet of my life. As a child, I memorized the spiritual definition of angels from Science and Health: "God's thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the inspiration of goodness, purity, and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality, and mortality" (p. 581). I had an experience that reminded me of "the inspiration of goodness."

A few days before Christmas I had flown to a city I had never visited. The last leg of my trip was to be by commuter train to a large metropolitan city. It was already dark when the shuttle bus from the airport dropped me at the train station. While I purchased my ticket, a train came and went. Since this station was served by both the local commuter train and Amtrak, people said, "Oh, there will be another train along soon."

I was soon alone on the platform, however, feeling desolate, cold, and deeply regretting my transportation choices. It had been a long day. I was feeling pretty discouraged when the thought came, "You could sing hymns." I recalled the countless times when hymns had been a comfort to me. The words of this hymn came to mind, reminding me of God's care (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 9):

He knows the angels that you need,
And sends them to your side,
To comfort, guard and guide.

Just at that moment, a woman appeared at the top of the long stairway to the train platform. When she reached the bottom, I asked her if she knew when the next train was due. She took out an official-looking book of schedules and told me the next train was due in about forty-five minutes. I was so cold that I almost couldn't feel my toes. We talked for a few minutes, and then she said there would be an unscheduled stop in a few minutes by a train going to my destination. She was an employee of the railroad, and had been called to fill in for a fellow worker on that train. She offered to ask the conductor if I could board with her.

In a few minutes a train pulled into the station, and I soon found myself comfortably tucked into a warm passenger car for the final leg of this trip. I felt as though I had been touched by an angel. I recalled the Bible verse from Exodus, "Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared" (23:20).

I was in awe at the way in which this verse had been fulfilled.

When I told a fellow traveler about this experience on the return flight, she said, "You were so lucky that she came along." But I didn't think it was luck or coincidence, but rather evidence of "the inspiration of goodness," of the spiritual intuition, expressed by the woman who came along.

When I stilled my anxious thought, prayed, and listened for God's answer, my need was met. I wondered later how many more times every day my experience would be blessed if I listened more consciously for angel messages! Whenever we feel alone, or uncertain, or overwhelmed, God is already caring for us and will send just the message we need to hear in just the way we can understand. Whether we are on a lonely train platform or in the middle of a crowded city, His angels are with us everywhere.
