Looking back on my experience of overcoming the addiction to nicotine, which took eighteen years to accomplish, I can see now that I was holding up my own healing. On the other hand, it was as though I were echoing Jacob: "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me" (Gen. 32:26). I had so much to learn about God! How glad I am that I never, never gave up! Though I was often sidetracked along the way by investigating other forms of treatment, I found that the operation of divine Principle, God, was what brought healing. Science and Health observes of Christ Jesus, "His purpose in healing was not alone to restore health, but to demonstrate his divine Principle" (p. 51).

From the time I was first introduced to Science and Health, there was a very sharp decline in the number of health problems I faced.
