I was a new student of Christian Science and praying for my first physical healing. Healing was very important to me because it would fulfill a childhood wish to witness present-day healing as Christ Jesus had taught and demonstrated it. Also, experiencing Christian healing would be an important sign to me that healing through prayer to God can happen today and that I could trust what I was learning of God to help me grow spiritually.
I recognized an opportunity for healing after I had been studying the Bible and Science and Health for about two years. I had a growth on one of my fingers that had been there for many years. It was a daily distraction and was often troublesome. My prayer was simple: if there appeared to be an imperfection in God's creation, then it needed to be healed because, no matter how small, its presence was a discredit to God's perfect creation. I knew it was legitimate to know the unreality of any cause for this growth because anything distracting and trouble-some is not caused by God, is not good, and therefore could not be part of His creation. As the Bible says, "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (Gen. 1:31).
I held to these truths for several weeks, but every time I checked, the wart was still there. One day as I earnestly prayed to know what I needed to understand to bring about healing, the message came to me to stop checking on the wart. If it was not created by God, then there was nothing to check on. From that moment I never saw that wart again. When I next noticed the finger, the wart was gone, and I was in awe! This was my "sign"! I trusted God completely. Also, this citation from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy expresses the ideas that were helpful to me in thinking of God as the only creator of the one and only creation: "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God" (p. 228).
