Before coming to know Christian Science, I was an adherent of a Protestant religion. Our large family, a Christian family to be sure, was familiar with the Bible, but we didn't really understand it or comprehend it until Science and Health gave us the Bible's spiritual meaning.

Prior to this I had suffered from a chronic lung disease. I was treated in a hospital for six months. After following a strict medical regimen, I appeared to be healed of the disease.

Then in 1976 I had to attend a course in Jakarta. About the same time a public lecture on Christian Science was being given one floor below. I considered myself a Christian, so I attended the lecture. I accepted Christian Science magazines and began studying them diligently, sensing that I was obtaining a new and fresh understanding about Christ's teaching. This instilled in me such hope that it was easy to let old concepts of God fall away.
