An unstoppable Church

As the book of Acts records, nothing could keep the disciples and the converts who joined them from spreading Christ Jesus' teachings. Nothing. Not imprisonment, not threats, not even death. They were on fire with a spiritual truth so big that people were drawn to it sometimes in spite of themselves.

On the Day of Pentecost, for example, some of those the disciples preached to were the very people who had scorned them for speaking in tongues and who had thought they were drunk. Yet the Bible says, "The same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls" (Acts 2:41).

And when Peter and John healed a lame man (see Acts, chaps. 3 and 4), they used people's interest in the event as an opportunity for preaching. A correction was made in the July 21, 1997 Sentinel: The third paragraph should have stated that Peter and John healed a lame man, not Peter and James. We apologize for the mistake. They were threatened by the priests and other officials because of their preaching. But the healing turned the tide: no one could deny that something significant had happened! So they were released because no reason for punishment could be found.
