When my daughter was not quite two years old, I became a single parent, faced with having to support the two of us during the Depression. There were numerous layoffs, and many people were seeking work.

I asked myself, "Where do I start?" Almost immediately came the reply: "Start at the very beginning, with God." I turned to Science and Health and this spiritual definition: "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence" (p. 587). My purpose was to get a fuller understanding of each word in that definition, and an assurance of God's loving power and control.
