Stand for Children—renewal and commitment in Washington, D.C.
The Stand for Children day in Washington, D.C., last June launched an extraordinary initiative in behalf of children in the United States. It was convened by the Children's Defense Fund, whose statement of purpose for the event was "a day of family and community renewal, celebration, and commitment to children.... A day to commit ourselves as a national community to do more to improve the quality of children's lives: their health, safety, school readiness, education, and future."
Founder and president Marian Wright Edelman spoke of "the need to heal our communities and nation morally and spiritually.... As tough as times are," she said, "and as hard as families are struggling for children, we can do better. It's time to hold ourselves to a higher standard in our homes, in our communities, and in our government at all levels."
"It's time to take action," declared the banners in Washington. "Our children's problems can be solved. But only if each and every one of us takes a stand."
