The first view of our new baby daughter indicated a severely deformed foot. The attending doctor's appraisal was that she would never walk normally and the best we could hope for was support from braces and orthopedic shoes.

We took her home and immediately called a Christian Science practitioner for Christian Science treatment. She read to us the following passage from Science and Health, and asked us to trust it as the truth of our daughter's being: "Christianity causes men to turn naturally from matter to Spirit, as the flower turns from darkness to light" (pp. 458–459).

The doctor had asked to see the baby again in three weeks. By that time her foot had assumed a more normal appearance. When he asked what we had done, I eagerly told him of our prayers and the help of the practitioner. He responded with disdain, stating that our daughter was severely handicapped and would need extensive treatment when she was older. I quietly left his office undaunted—confident that her healing was taking place and would be fully evident to everyone. I thought of the verse from the Bible "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1).
