I had an experience that showed how prayer can eradicate the fear of violence in our lives. One day when I was a delegate to a large convention in Washington, D.C., I stayed late at the main hall for a meeting. At the start of the meeting, the convention officials had told us that it was safe to ride only in certain brands of cabs. But on this day, when I went outside, the doorman wasn't there and there was just one cab—not one of the recommended types—at the curb.

I got in, giving the driver the name of my hotel. As we started out, however, I began to feel apprehensive since the driver wasn't heading in the direction of my hotel.

When I repeated my hotel name, the driver said nothing. Then I asked him where we were going, and he said in a quiet voice, "I'm going to teach you a lesson." Startled and fearful, I sat back and began to pray in earnest as we entered a very busy, but poor, part of town. To add to my apprehensions, it was now getting dark outside. I recognized that there was a solution to the problem because God, not fear, was omnipotent—right there, right then.
