Can our thoughts of the environment affect our well-being?

Most of us today are very conscious of the air we breathe, especially in crowded cities or in highly industrial areas. And every effort that governments and other organizations are taking to improve air quality and keep our beautiful earth as unspoiled as possible is vital.

It is, however, worth considering how much our own thinking can contribute to keeping the atmosphere purer and cleaner and help in maintaining our well-being also. This important contribution is possible as our thought is spiritualized. We must increasingly relinquish reliance on material things, on what appears to be real to the corporeal senses, and open our thought to God's universal love and omnipotence. The Apostle Paul says in his letter to the Romans, "... to be spiritually minded is life and peace" (8:6).

Spiritualization of thought helps us to understand the true basis of being—that God, Spirit, creates and governs all and that man's true nature is entirely spiritual. This understanding enables us to demonstrate God's control of the universe. To attain this goal, our thought has to be more loving, unselfish, and pure —more Christlike. "Nothing aside from the spiritualization— yea, the highest Christianization—of thought and desire, can give the true perception of God and divine Science, that results in health, happiness, and holiness," states Mary Baker Eddy in her book Miscellaneous Writings (p. 15).
