"The beauty of holiness"

The pontoon boat glided slowly through the water as dusk began to settle on the lake. The light from the setting sun dilated, crept back from the surrounding hills, and flickered upon the water's surface. The human scene offers many such examples of beauty. All of us have our own favorites. But these views only hint at a deeper beauty; the Psalmist recognized this when he wrote, "Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness" (Ps. 29:2).

The beauty of holiness is not a matter of slimness, age, the color of one's skin, the latest fashion, or even an attractive personality. The beauty of holiness is found in an understanding of God, in yielding to His will and expressing His qualities in our daily lives. One might well ask himself, as he prepares to leave home and checks his appearance, not "How do I look?" but rather "How holy am I?"

The very source of all beauty and goodness is God. Christian Science teaches that God is All-in-all and is wholly good. God is everywhere; hence anything unlike God has no room to exist. God, good, has created man spiritual and perfect in His own image and likeness. Man has by reflection all of God's qualities, including beauty, purity, holiness. You and I in our true being are this spiritual man. Therefore if we are looking for more beauty in our lives, we are not trying to get something we do not already have. Rather we are trying to see the loveliness that has always been expressed in us and in others.
