Commitment to The Mother Church

At this essential time in the history and work of our movement, it is appropriate and timely to call to the attention of members of The Mother Church this By-Law from Article VIII of the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy:

Church Organizations Ample. SECT. 15. Members of this Church shall not unite with organizations which impede their progress in Christian Science. God requires our whole heart, and He supplies within the wide channels of The Mother Church dutiful and sufficient occupation for all its members.

The struggle against what Mrs. Eddy calls "the advancing spiritual era" is apparently not only from without, but also, to a degree, from within the membership of our Church. The anonymous group calling itself the mailing fund is striving to overturn the Manual-authorized government of The Mother Church. Any group that has such a purpose impedes the progress in Christian Science of those who are in any way associated with it.

Patiently and prayerfully we have watched the tares grow beside the wheat in hopes that there might be a reformation and a return to the sanity of unity through which Christian Science will bless a waiting world. We continue to have an abiding trust in members' spiritual ability to close the door on any influence but the divine, and in that sacred, Christly consciousness to consider their commitment to The Mother Church.
