Making paving stones out of the walls we face

On our way to town we used to pass a high wall. One day, workmen were demolishing it, and the next time we passed there was a view of a garden, graceful trees, and lawns. As the work proceeded, we realized a path was being constructed, and some of the materials from the wall were being used as paving stones. What an improvement!

As we thought further about what the workmen had done, we could see an analogy to what had happened to our family after we were introduced to Christian Science. As the problems we had faced were solved through prayer, each experience formed a paving stone in a pathway to a better understanding of God as divine Love, as a loving Father-Mother who created only good. Before our family learned of the Science of Christ, my mother always seemed to be in a hospital or nursing home. After years of suffering and three major operations, she was told that she would always be an invalid and that no more could be done for her.

At this point she accepted a neighbor's invitation to attend a testimony meeting at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist. She came home full of hope and confidence. She borrowed the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to study it. She did not have treatment in Christian Science, but by reading the textbook she was soon completely restored to health, and her healing was acknowledged by the doctors. Mother lived a long and useful life working in the Christian Science movement, including serving as a public practitioner of Christian Science.
