Inspiration on a walk

As I walked, troubled and afraid, I noticed a small plant with some unusual pods growing along its stem. It was a fernlike plant, not pretty, and it had no use that I could discern. What a kinship I felt with that homely plant!

I bent down to examine it. As I broke off a stem, I noticed that each pod was etched with swirls. I marveled at the intricate design of these pods, each individual, yet all alike.

I kept the branch in my office several days. I studied the pods again, and saw that each swirl of the pod was actually a small folded leaf. As it dried, each leaf of the pod cracked open to reveal seeds held securely within it. When I held a pod in my hand, a leaf—full of seeds—dropped off and gently floated from my hand.
