The first time I read Science and Health I had an instantaneous healing. I'd been ill for over a year with something that doctors couldn't heal. I opened the book at page 393 and read: "Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death. Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man." (I was at work and able to read only for about twenty minutes.)
I thought, "All right, I will give this a try." I began by affirming, "I rise in the strength of Spirit; I exercise this God-given authority; I take possession of my body; God has made me capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on me." When I arrived home later in the day, the illness had completely disappeared.
This healing gave me the confidence to stand firm in the truth a few years later, because I knew full well that Christian Science can heal. When our daughter was three years old, she developed a large swelling on her neck. Even though my husband and I were still fairly new students of Christian Science, we had seen enough of its healing power to be able to trust it completely. We called a practitioner and asked her to help pray for the child.
