"His arm encircles me, and mine, and all"

Barbara loved to go to the beach with her parents. They lived near the Atlantic Ocean and spent many Saturdays building sand castles, looking for special shells to share with friends, and swimming. Barbara had learned to swim before she entered kindergarten, and it was one of her favorite things to do.

As much as she liked to swim, Barbara liked to go to the Christian Science Sunday School even more. She looked forward to that happy hour each Sunday when she learned about God, about Christ Jesus, and about the prophets and other great men and women in the Bible. One of her favorite Bible accounts was of the time when Jesus was asleep in a ship and a great storm came (see Mark 4:36–39). The wind was strong, and the waves filled the ship with water. The disciples were afraid that they would drown, so they wakened Jesus. He got up and "rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm." Barbara had seen that no matter what scary situation she might find herself in, God's love was all-powerful and would keep her safe.

The Sunday School class also learned about the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, who wrote a poem called "The Mother's Evening Prayer" (Poems, p. 4). The second verse reads:
