Are we listening?
Today God is as near to us as He was to those in Bible times. We can hear Him if we listen for His voice. But sometimes it may seem as though there is static, or interference, or that we can't hear as well as the ancients did. Perhaps we need to look more closely at what characterized their listening.
Humility appears to be a basic requirement if we are to hear God's voice. Cultivating humility helps clear up the static of egotism, which feels it knows it all and doesn't need God's help.
Moses, the great deliverer of the children of Israel, was continually appealing to God for help and guidance and getting his answers directly. The writer of the book of Exodus records, "And the Lord spake unto Moses face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend" (33:11).
