Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy teaches that "tumors, ulcers, tubercles, inflammation, pain, deformed joints, are waking dream-shadows, dark images of mortal thought, which flee before the light of Truth" (p. 418). A healing I had in 1992 illustrated this to me very clearly.

One night, out of the blue, I was seized with such intense pain in my abdomen that I asked my husband to call a Christian Science practitioner to help me. The practitioner prayed for me at once, and I quieted down and had a fairly good night. It took a whole week of prayer, though, to overcome this attack completely. During this week I was sometimes very fearful, and images of illness I had seen other women battle came into mind. I had always been grateful that I could understand man to be a spiritual idea of God, untouched by disease or deterioration. But now here I was, having the same symptoms.

Once during this week of praying, struggling, and learning, I got impatient and said to the practitioner, "You have always helped me before." He calmly answered, "And I will help you this time," well knowing that this pain and fear had no chance if resisted with scientific, unwavering prayer and trust in God.
