Hymns: echoes of Love
"Mom, I do appreciate everything you and Dad have done for me. I remember the way you used to sing hymns to me when I needed comforting."
Earlier in the day I had asked our son if he had taken the time to think about and appreciate all the things we had done for him through the years. He was a young adult now, and was getting ready to leave home and launch out on his own. It was quite a surprise to me that, of all we had done to nurture him and to prepare him for adulthood, he should single out in memory those precious moments of comforting when we had felt the love of God together through the singing of hymns.
When a child needs comforting, it's natural to turn to what you yourself find truly comforting and healing. For me, that's the love of God.
