While growing up I attended a Christian Science Sunday School,...
While growing up I attended a Christian Science Sunday School, where I was introduced to Christian Science and taught spiritual truths. I enjoyed it when I went, liking the different Bible stories and meeting other kids. But as I got into high school, I lost interest in Sunday School and stopped attending. I began drinking and participating in the types of immoral behavior that often entice young people. I became very depressed and felt empty and alone.
Then I hit a low point in my life—everything seemed to go wrong, and I was very down on myself and quite uneasy. (I did slowly taper down on my drinking habit as I met some new friends.) I began to do some soul-searching after a while, and read some Sentinels that my mother gave me. I really enjoyed them, but did not fully understand everything I was reading.
Yearning to know more about my true self, the spiritual universe, and God, I decided that perhaps it was time to sit down and read the copy of Science and Health that my mother had also given me, and which I kept in my dresser drawer. This was wonderful—like a great discovery! I was led to new ideas and felt that God had been preparing me for this time of insight and discovery. Old thoughts and habits just dropped away like clothing that didn't fit anymore. I was really beginning to understand God and myself more, and to see somewhat the vision that Mary Baker Eddy had of the power of divine Love.
