In 1991 our son was born, and my life has changed immeasurably for the better since. My wife and I have prayed to regard this little boy as God's child, not the mere offspring of human parents. And we had the opportunity to prove we could safely, confidently turn to God for healing early in his life.

When he was four months old we noted an absence of bowel movements for several days, along with a corresponding lack of joy and vigor, qualities he normally exhibits in abundance. I was concerned, primarily for his comfort and well-being, but also because of numerous recent legal attempts to restrict Christian Scientists' practice of their religion fully, including the right to choose total reliance on prayer to God for healing children. Frankly, I can't conceive of a life devoid of Christian Science and its blessings for my family and me.

During the third day of this condition, when I was at work, my wife called to say that while she had been tending to him carefully, our son had cried and been sluggish most of the day. After hanging up the telephone, I paused for a moment, quietly asking God what I needed to know to help our son. In the past, such moments of prayer—in which I often thought of Biblical figures, their times of trial, and their humble communion with God—would almost invariably still my confusion and put me at peace, ready and willing to hear the message I knew God would surely send me. They brought light and calm, where before had been only darkness and turmoil.
