When I was nine years old, I found Christian Science literature...
When I was nine years old, I found Christian Science literature in my maternal grandmother's house. From then on I read Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy from time to time, especially the spiritual interpretation of the Lord's Prayer. I remember that when I was a teenager we had an aunt who was ill, and whom we cared for at night. She had been under the care of doctors for three months. One night when it was my turn to be with her, her condition looked very serious. I made her comfortable in her bed, gave her a kiss, and told her to have a peaceful sleep. I told her I would read the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation, and did so several times. Soon I perceived that she was sleeping quietly. I continued reading for a long while. That night she slept very well, and from the next day on, without any medication, she began to recuperate completely.
After I was married, I stopped studying and relying on Christian Science almost entirely. During that time I had many setbacks, including the loss of a little son when he was only nine months old. That was the moment when I decided to study Christian Science seriously, not just read it. This study was of great help to me in raising and educating five children, and I had many opportunities to see the practical application of the religion.
On one occasion, one of the girls had a high fever. My prayers seemed to have no healing effect. On the contrary, she seemed to get worse. It was one of those nights with intense wind and rain, and going to get the doctor meant walking a kilometer. I prayed and heard a voice say to me, "You should express more love." Immediately I remembered a quarrel I'd had with another person. Thus I prayed specifically for God to help me to love. A feeling of great love then enveloped me. Before leaving, I went to check on my daughter again, and she was perfectly well, without any fever.
