One of my favorite hymns states that "year by year" the hand of our Holy Father has "brought us / on through dangers oft unknown" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 115). Surely God keeps us out of harm's way, but this testimony, as the testimonies of countless others, demonstrates freedom from "dangers oft unknown" to family, friends, and co-workers.
One day, while I was at work, I experienced a sudden onset of excruciating chest pain. Immediately I called a Christian Science practitioner and requested prayerful help. I had called for my wife, and by the time of her arrival I felt as though I might lose consciousness.
When we arrived home, she helped me into the house. Lying on the bed, I listened as my wife spoke with the practitioner on the telephone. Both of them reassured me of my spiritual identity and perfect being as God's man. The passage "to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace" (Rom. 8:6) alerted me to counter mentally every symptom of the illness.
