For children.
Matthew and his friends
Matthew was very happy in nursery school. There were lots of things to do. He liked building with blocks, squishing his hands in the finger paint, moving to the rhythms in music, and feeding the gerbils. But most of all, Matthew liked being with the other boys and girls. He had never been with so many children before. When he wanted to play, he gave them a push so that they knew he was there. Sometimes he pushed too hard, and they fell down. Instead of playing with him, the children would go away.
Matthew's nursery school teacher was also his Sunday School teacher. He attended a Christian Science Sunday School, where he learned that Love is one of the names for God found in the Bible. Because everyone is, in truth, Love's image, or the child of God, it is natural for us to love each other. Matthew liked to think about this.
One day on the playground, Matthew pushed P.D. off the balance beam. P.D. yelled, "Leave me alone!" and ran off to help the other children make a big pile of the red and yellow leaves that had fallen from the trees.
