True perception—and healing

Progress and freedom are natural to our desire to live spiritually.

When my children were little, often when I'd call them to dinner, they preferred to keep right on playing. Then I had to shout a bit louder, "Didn't you hear?" even though I was convinced that they had heard me the first time. With my second call I admonished them to be obedient.

Christ Jesus was admonishing his followers to be obedient to somewhat different demands when he inquired, "Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not?" (Mark 8:18). Jesus wasn't saying this to the blind and the deaf who came to him for healing, but to his disciples, whose physical sight and hearing were doubtless normal. He said it when they didn't understand his warning to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. The Master was encouraging them to think from the spiritual basis on which his works and teachings rested, instead of from a material basis. He admonished them, "Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?" (Mark 8:17). And he reminded them of the proofs of God's provision that he had brought about before their eyes.
