About a year ago I had a healing in Christian Science that continues to inspire me. After moving a heavy piece of furniture, I felt pain throughout one side of my body. Although I was able to lie down, attempts to move or rise were severely restricted, and the arm on that side was useless.
As I lay in bed praying, it occurred to me to review mentally some of what I'd learned in a recent study of Christ Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. This study had included a search of Mary Baker Eddy's writings for references to that great discourse. The study had shown that a number of basic rules for Christian Science healing are directly traceable to statements Jesus made in the sermon. I thought of where he said: "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?" (Matt. 6:25). I was struck by the word more in "life more than meat" and "body [more] than raiment." Didn't this word point out that man's life is spiritual, distinct from physical constituents? I recalled Mary Baker Eddy's comment in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "If we follow the command of our Master, 'Take no thought for your life,' we shall never depend on bodily conditions, structure, or economy, but we shall be masters of the body, dictate its terms, and form and control it with Truth" (p. 228).
Through the night I held to this statement and to ideas that came in relation to it. I declared that my true being includes God's spiritual qualities—freedom, spiritual power, love, joy, integrity—none of which can be subject to damage. I extended this prayerful reasoning to include all mankind, seeing that it is not in God's loving will and plan for anyone, anywhere, to experience restriction to right activity or achievement. The thought came that this wasn't a bad experience at all, since it was helping me to do better praying for the freedom of all humanity. God's love for everyone became more prominent in my thought than the thought of pain. Although the condition prevailed during the night hours, suddenly at dawn I rose from bed with perfect freedom. The pain and incapacity had vanished, never to return.
