Merrimack Journal
From the Merrimack Journal (Dracut, Massachusetts), January 7, 1993
I was very interested to read your editorial in the December 3, 1992, issue of the MERRIMACK JOURNAL. I found it especially ironic that the same page included an opinion piece pointing out how eight in ten Americans feel that our individual rights are being eroded. What right is more fundamental to a concerned and loving parent than the right to choose the very best and most effective treatment for their child —not only when the child is ill, but at all times?
I'm sure that if your child were sick you would take him or her to the very best doctor you knew. Christian Scientists, likewise, want their children to receive the finest care available. The difference, of course, is that Christian Scientists turn immediately to God in prayer and feel it is natural to trust their children wholly to His all powerful care. As a child, I was healed and protected many times solely through the power of prayer— and I continue to be as an adult. I certainly have no regrets that my parents relied on prayer throughout my upbringing.
