Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries:...
"Christian Science raises the standard of liberty and cries: 'Follow me! Escape from the bondage of sickness, sin, and death!' Jesus marked out the way. Citizens of the world, accept the 'glorious liberty of the children of God,' and be free!" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 227). Christian Science teaches that sin's necessity is to destroy itself, and this great truth was demonstrated for me.
While I was an inmate in prison, all joy seemed to leave my life, replaced with bitterness and hate. My incorrigible, anti-authority attitude controlled me; I vowed bitterly, as if my problems were not of my own doing, that I would not allow the police to ruin my life.
One Sunday I attended a church service, and decided to take a Bible back to my cell. (Carrying a Bible was viewed as a sign of weakness in the eyes of other inmates, so I took a newspaper off the back pew to hide the book.) Back at my cell I realized that the newspaper was The Christian Science Monitor. I was not raised in a Christian Scientist family, but I had attended a Christian Science Sunday School when very young, and remembered the words on the wall of the Sunday School, "God is Love." I decided that I would attend a Christian Science church service. Initially, I only saw the service as an hour of peace away from the prison atmosphere, but I became a regular attender.
