When I was hospitalized for kidney trouble, my doctor told me I would never be completely healthy for the rest of my life, that I would have to take medicine as long as I lived, and that I could not expect to bear children. In addition, I would have to have a limited diet. I did not want to live such a miserable life.
My elder sister was studying Christian Science, and she suggested that I look into it for healing. At first I thought that imploring God when I was in trouble would also be miserable. A Christian Scientist told me that God is not someone to plead with, but that through understanding God I could see my true self, as it is written in the Bible, made in God's image and likeness (see Gen. 1:26). I was able to accept this as true, and learned to drop the false thought of sickness.
Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously." I learned to be receptive to God's commands. I found I could also accept that since God is All-in-all, my true thoughts come from the divine Mind.
