Spirit can form us anew

Sometimes a situation that seems especially challenging turns out to be an opportunity for great progress.

When I was taking my car for servicing one day some years ago, I was singing and feeling very happy. As I was doing this, a thought kept coming to me: "You are a spiritual idea." From my study of Christian Science, I knew that this was an affirmation that man is not material but is instead the spiritual child of God. And in a few moments this idea literally became a life-saver for me. With no warning, my car was hit by another traveling at great speed. I lost control of the car, which was severely damaged and carried some distance by the impact.

The people in the nearby cars came to assist me. I was in a state of shock, and I could hardly breathe. I leaned on the car to keep from falling. An ambulance and the police came immediately.

The doctor first checked the other driver, who had only some superficial injuries. When he came to help me, I assured him that I did not need his help. He was surprised and said that I could have internal injuries, and he felt that I should be hospitalized. I thanked him for his concern but declined. He became insistent because he felt he would be responsible for not having attended to me should I suffer adverse effects from the accident. I said I would be happy to sign any paper to free him from the responsibility, but that I preferred not to be checked. This I did, and the ambulance withdrew.
