For me, the most important thing I do as I pray is to place full confidence in God and strive to feel with certainty that He is governing and caring for everything.

Six years ago I had an experience in which I learned much about prayer. I was suffering from a recurring illness. Although I always turned to prayer as we are taught to do in Christian Science, and would recover, in a little while I would have a relapse. The last time that I began to feel the symptoms, I called a Christian Science practitioner who very lovingly agreed to help me. She affirmed that I should not be afraid, since in truth I expressed the spiritual qualities of goodness and health that God gives. Illness isn't one of those qualities. I looked for passages in the Bible and in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that would help me understand man's true nature as God's child. I was especially helped by a statement I found in Science and Health: "Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man."

Although I wasn't immediately better, I steadfastly affirmed my perfection as the child of God. Yet I still felt some fear. When night came, I had a fever and couldn't open my eyes. Also, I wasn't normally alert.
