I was five years old when our family was driving over the Allegheny Mountains from New York to Kentucky and the brakes on our car suddenly went out. No one said a word. Dad steered quietly around steep curves safely to the bottom, while I gazed in childish wonder and mounting terror at the deep valley below. That picture haunted me for years.
In the meantime I moved to Florida where there are no hills and few steps to climb, so I did not come to grips with this fear.
The phobia returned at various times when I was faced with heights—a visit to Pikes Peak, Colorado; a tourist stop at Mammoth Cave National Park. Some years before, I had been healed of five years of semi-invalidism through reading the Bible together with Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. These books had taught me how to pray scientifically.
