Three quarters of a century ago, my mother was healed of acute appendicitis when a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was offered to her by a neighbor. She immediately became absorbed with the study of this teaching. That study and the spiritual growth that followed, together with the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, enabled her to find permanent healing without resorting to surgery.

Shortly after this healing, my brother and I were enrolled as pupils in a Christian Science Sunday School, which was in a branch church some ten miles from our home. We had a long trip by streetcar every Sunday morning, but it was never a burden, and we were very regular in our attendance. I have fond memories of the hours spent in my Sunday School classes. I especially remember one teacher who had us commit to memory a quotation from each week's Bible Lesson. By the time I became twenty and left Sunday School, I had accumulated a treasure of spiritual truths that have been a great help and guidance to me throughout my life.

During my early twenties I went through a period of loneliness. I was working but had no friends and little or no social life. As I prayed to gain a better sense of fulfillment and a more meaningful life, I found myself reading and studying the chapter entitled "Marriage" in Science and Health. I then made an effort to understand more of the truths of God and man and the unlimited resources of infinite Soul. Soon I found a new circle of friends, and we had many happy times together.
