INSIDE: LOOKING INTO THIS ISSUE

There was a line in a recent movie where one character said to another, "It is more important for you to look good than to succeed." It sometimes seems that surface appearances and style have replaced substance in the way progress is gauged these days.

Yet even two thousand years ago Jesus' disciples argued among themselves about "who should be the greatest." Jesus, however, had a different approach to success. He said, for example, "If I honour myself, my honour is nothing." He gave all the honor to God and, in so doing, he accomplished more for the world than anyone else ever has. ...

Considering his example, we see that humility couldn't possibly mean letting the world walk all over us. To be humble actually means that we honestly are acknowledging God as our true source of ability. Jesus stated, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." The Father who dwells within all of us—God—is the source that motivates and inspires us, and His love and wisdom are what we humbly draw from if we truly wish to move forward in our lives.
