I was raised in Christian Science and privileged to attend a Christian Science Sunday School until I went to college. For the preparation that this spiritual education and training gave me, I am humbly grateful.

Some years before World War II, when I was a freshman in college, I was studying and reading several hours each day. At the start of the second semester, I started to have blurred vision and headaches. An infection developed around my eyes, and the freshman proctor took me to the infirmary. Tests indicated that my vision was deteriorating. Very strong spectacles were prescribed, and I was to be sent home to avoid danger to the other students from contagion. In the meantime, I was confined to the infirmary.

Earlier that semester, I had met informally each week with faculty and students who were interested in Christian Science, and we had read together the Bible Lessons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly. One of the group now brought a Concordance to Mary Baker Eddy's writings to me, and finding this passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, he read aloud: "When Jesus declares that 'the light of the body is the eye,' he certainly means that light depends upon Mind, not upon the complex humors, lenses, muscles, the iris and pupil, constituting the visual organism." My friend also found a second statement in Science and Health that makes clear the dominion of Mind: "Christian Science reveals incontrovertibly that Mind is All-in-all, that the only realities are the divine Mind and idea."
