Church—a steadfast support and help
Whatever our need, the many activities of The Mother Church are available to help and heal us.
In conversations these days one may hear individuals refer to their "support network." They could be talking about a closeknit family or circle of supportive friends, or they could mean a group of people who get together periodically to discuss how to cope with some problem they all have in common.
Most of us want to know that there is someone around to extend a helping hand as we walk the road of life, which can get awfully bumpy at times. Yet, as Christian Scientists, we hesitate to substitute reliance on human affection and opinions for unwavering trust in God's ever-present help and guidance. How kind or reasonable would it be, though, to demand that we reach such a state of absolute spiritual confidence without providing some practical means of cultivating that trust? It certainly would be contrary to God's tender, loving nature.
When Mrs. Eddy established The First Church of Christ, Scientist, she organized a Church rich in ways to support its members' efforts to work out the challenges of human existence through spiritual growth and development.
