Praying to love our cities
Does the size of urban troubles shrink your trust in God?
Historically the city was the traditional center of protection. But today many inner cities have become centers for grave societal ills: poverty, unemployment, crime, illiteracy. Many of the people living in these areas find themselves condemned socially and economically.
Until recently I lived in the suburbs but attended a Christian Science branch church in the heart of a large city. Several years ago local riots, reported worldwide, stopped yards away from the church's railings.
For years, our church had prayed to support our community. But at this time we felt an urgent need (no doubt shared by other local churches) to understand more thoroughly the immediate presence of God and the consequent safety this understanding can provide us all.
