Because Christian Science is preventive as well as curative in the treatment of disease, I had a healthy and happy childhood. My mother was a student of Christian Science and used this Science as a guide for living. In our home, disease was neither talked about nor feared; thus we left room for God and His goodness to occupy thought.

I remember being sick only once during my childhood. I had chicken pox and was quickly healed in Christian Science. The only accident I can recall was a fall on a broken flower pot. The gash closed quickly without the need of stitches, and later the scar disappeared. At one time there was a particularly violent thunderstorm. My mother drew me close to her and shared verses from the book of Psalms. She always reached out to God for comfort and protection. I feel very privileged to have been brought up in this Science.

With the prayerful help of a Christian Science practitioner, my father was healed, in one day, of severe stomach pain. The prayer that healed him of the stomach pain also healed him of a longstanding habit of heavy smoking. He never smoked again. My father was also healed of an annoying rash that had been diagnosed as incurable by a doctor.
