"The Tennessee embryos-custody trial, the abortion argument rekindled by the U.S. Supreme Court and an epidemic of child-abuse stories worked this summer to draw attention from an equally heartrending three-week trial in California.
"A Christian Science couple was convicted of child endangerment, a felony. Mark and Susan Rippberger were indicted more than four years ago after their nine-month-old daughter died. They were acquitted of involuntary manslaughter and found guilty of the lesser crime.
"Their crime? They relied on the teachings of their church for help in time of trouble. When their child became ill they depended on spiritual healing rather than medical science.
