Justice and God's law of harmony

We hear reports in the media today about "crack babies"—those who are born with addiction because their mothers are cocaine addicts. And we read of babies being born with AIDS. Our hearts go out to these children, who seem to be the victims of such cruel, unjust circumstances.

It would appear that each generation, by what it does, affects those who come after it. We may well ask, Where is the justice in life?

One of the Old Testament prophets asked a similar question but came up with a surprising reassurance. Ezekiel insists with startling clarity that there is justice in spite of appearances to the contrary. In a book of the Bible that takes his name, the prophet declares God's law of justice to the people: "What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? As I live, saith the Lord God, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. Behold, all souls are mine."
