I grew up in a home where both parents were devoted Christian Scientists, and I saw challenges of all sorts—business, physical, and emotional—met through the study and understanding of the Bible and the writings of Mrs. Eddy. Illnesses in my childhood, including measles and mumps, were healed through reliance on Christian Science. As an adult, my own study of Science has brought about numerous healings and has enriched my life. In addition to having many physical healings, I have found the application of Christian Science to academic studies and my current business career invaluable.
Having a deeper understanding of rewarding companionship has been of particular help to me. Several years ago I was involved in a relationship that grew into a frustrating situation for me. I felt that affection wasn't expressed toward me, but I was afraid of being alone if I ended the relationship. I realized that I needed to do some earnest praying about the situation.
Through study of what Christian Science teaches about love and affection, I realized that I needed to concentrate more on expressing love than having it expressed toward me, not just in this particular relationship but in my dealings with everyone I knew. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy writes: "Human affection is not poured forth vainly, even though it meet no return. Love enriches the nature, enlarging, purifying, and elevating it." My understanding of love grew beyond just personal attraction and attachment to a better expression of divine Love, which we know in Christian Science as God.
