"The evidence of things not seen"
To material sense, the things of Spirit are insubstantial, even unreal. But spiritual understanding shows us the reality and practicality of Spirit.
The spiritual healings of Christ Jesus show us that the unseen presence of God, Spirit, is real; that the eternal things of Spirit are tangible and must ultimately overcome all material, temporal things and conditions. The Bible speaks of faith in the things of Spirit as "the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
Jesus, understanding that God, infinite Mind, constitutes Life, brought to bear the power of Spirit on every form of human suffering. He healed without drugs or medicine or any other material means, but simply through understanding prayer. Jesus' example gives us confidence that communication with the divine Mind is possible and that the power of this Mind—not the so-called human mind—heals and is accessible to us. Jesus declared, "The Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works." He knew that divine Mind, omnipotent Love, the supreme intelligence that creates all, must always remain omnipotent and govern all.
This scientific understanding of God was the source of Jesus' unfailing faith. And it can be ours, too. For our beloved Way-shower gave us this assurance: "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also." Christian Science shows how we can do this by cultivating faith that is based on spiritual understanding. The following example illustrates this.
