More than twenty years ago I began to study Christian Science...
More than twenty years ago I began to study Christian Science seriously and to apply my understanding of the teachings of this complete, wonderful religion and way of life. Soon after this, on an icy December morning, I was involved in a head-on collision while on my way to work. I was the only occupant in my car, and I lost consciousness after being thrown from the vehicle. I was taken to a nearby hospital, where it was determined that my neck and pelvic bones were broken. The prognosis was that, if I lived, I would most likely be paralyzed.
All during this time, I was told afterward, I kept asking for someone by name. When they reached my daughter by telephone, she recognized the name as that of a Christian Science practitioner. She called the practitioner, and her dedicated prayerful work reversed the alarming physical evidence. Every difficulty was healed through knowing the truth of man's wholeness, completeness, and indestructibility as in truth God's perfect reflection. The simple truths I had been learning sustained me. The one thought I was able to hold to through the first night was the first line of the twenty-third Psalm: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want."
While in the hospital, I relied on Christian Science. The bones were not set medically. The head osteologist stopped by several times to examine me and was incredulous at my progress. The doctors took X-rays and shook their heads in disbelief at the healing taking place. The first time I stood on my feet, about two weeks after the accident, the nurses applauded. As a result of prayer, I never needed to be in a cast or neck brace. (I did wear a soft collar for a time.) I was home with my family before Christmas and back to work three months later completely healed.
