When our daughter was about five years old, she would periodically wake up terrified during the night and come wake me. I would carry her back to bed and reassure her that God was with her, that there is no place where God isn't, because God is everywhere. She would feel comforted and go back to sleep; but we would have to leave the hall light on for her, and she never closed her bedroom door. This is how she slept for several years.

Then she really began having "bad nights." Besides her fear of the dark and the terrible nightmares, she began to suffer from sleeplessness and would toss and turn until the early morning hours. This made it hard for her to get up for school the next day.

She never could say what scared her. Her father and I tried to explain to her that there wasn't anything in the room with her to be afraid of, but nothing seemed to help. Human love and reasoning didn't bring any permanent solution.
