About two months prior to the 1987 Annual Meeting of The Mother Church...
About two months prior to the 1987 Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, the hearing in one of my ears became severely impaired. When this happened, I immediately prayed, reasoning with spiritual truths of God and man.
I recognized the validity of this passage in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 486): "Sight, hearing, all the spiritual senses of man, are eternal. They cannot be lost. Their reality and immortality are in Spirit and understanding, not in matter,—hence their permanence." This statement was also of great help to me (ibid., p. 425): "Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew."
During the Annual Meeting a testimony given by a man in his nineties, who lives a full and active life and whose sight and hearing are sound, really impressed me. I reasoned that if this man could be demonstrating the eternality of the spiritual senses, I could too.
