I am a lifelong Christian Scientist, and my earliest recollection...
I am a lifelong Christian Scientist, and my earliest recollection of a spiritual healing is of one that took place when I was a very young child. While playing barefooted, I stepped on an upturned rake, driving one of the tines through my foot. My parents, who were fairly new in their study of Christian Science, washed the foot and wrapped it in clean cloth. Then they called a Christian Science practitioner, who prayed for me. I remember all the loving care I received and feeling no fear. Before long I was up and about again, entirely healed.
I am grateful to have been enrolled as a pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School at an early age. My training at home centered on the Bible and on Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I also had the constant example of my parents, who relied on God faithfully. Thus I gradually came to realize the importance of holding to the fact that God is Life and that man, God's perfect child, manifests the spiritual qualities derived from Him. This realization has stayed with me through college, law school, military experience during the Second World War, and professional and family life. It has favorably affected every aspect of my experience.
In 1940 I was called to take a physical examination under the military selective service law. I was diagnosed as having a pronounced heart murmur and told I was unfit for military service. Later I commented to a Christian Science practitioner that things seemed to be working out in such a way that apparently I would not be involved with the Army. She reminded me that in my real nature as God's child, made in His image, I included no disability or deficiency. Recognizing the validity of her statement, I simply rejected the notion that a heart murmur could be true of me, or anyone else, whenever the thought of it occurred.
