One morning several years ago I fell down a long flight of tile stairs in my home. The fall rendered me temporarily unconscious. Two of our children were there, and my husband suggested they go to their rooms to pray. Some moments later I regained consciousness, and the first thing I saw was our little daughter standing on the stairs above me with an open Bible in her hands. With a radiant smile she said, "Look what I found, Mommy. It says here, 'Shake thyself from the dust; arise'" (Isa. 52:2).

Feeling quite helpless at the time, I was nevertheless profoundly touched by our daughter's pure, childlike trust. And so, with great effort and the assistance of my husband, I made it to bed. It appeared that some internal injury was causing acute pain.

Since I was scheduled to serve that morning as librarian of the local Reading Room, I began to consider what to do about getting a substitute. After some deliberation, I decided to go.
